Bold and bright colors can be a distraction for potential home buyers, while softer, neutral hues may have the opposite effect. This insight comes from a survey conducted by Fixr.com, which involved more than 60 top home staging and design professionals to identify the best and worst paint colors for selling a home in 2025.

The survey results highlighted lime green as the least favorable interior paint color, with 73% of respondents advising against it. Other colors to avoid include bold pink (42%), red (35%), purple (33%), bold orange (30%), and mustard yellow (20%).

Despite the trend of bold colors in home design—such as reds and purples being named among the 2025 Colors of the Year by leading paint firms—experts suggest using these hues sparingly. Instead of covering walls with them, it's recommended to incorporate such colors into smaller accessories like throw pillows or artwork.

For wall colors, experts advise opting for neutrals such as soft or warm whites. These were favored by 85% of respondents for living areas when selling a home. Other recommended colors include greige (28%), beige (24%), taupe (18%), blush earthy tones (12%), soft greens (10%), and browns (6%).

When it comes to bedrooms, warm neutrals topped the list at 76%, followed by soft or warm whites at 42%. Earthy greens were chosen by 25%, cool blues by 18%, blush tones and taupe each garnered 10%, and beige was selected by 8%.

Neutrals are also preferred for exterior siding. Off-white was favored by 45% of participants, with natural wood close behind at 36%. Other popular choices included dark gray (24%), natural stone and taupe both at 18%, light gray at 15%, and black and navy blue each receiving support from 13% of those surveyed.
