Ohio State University President Walter "Ted" Carter Jr. addressed the university community with a message on October 2, 2024. In his communication, he expressed gratitude for the contributions of students, faculty, and staff to the campuses and surrounding communities.

President Carter highlighted the approaching one-year anniversary of the Israel-Hamas war and its impact. He acknowledged that global conflicts and frequent natural disasters can have profound effects on individuals within the university community. "While much of it is out of our control, we know it can have deep and personal impacts on members of our community," he stated.

Carter encouraged members of the Ohio State community to support each other and utilize available health and well-being resources provided by the university. He emphasized that these resources are accessible to both faculty and staff.

The president also addressed concerns about campus safety following a series of Buckeye Alerts issued in mid-September. He reassured that "the safety of our campus communities is our highest priority." Ohio State maintains regular communication with Columbus city leaders, while the Ohio State University Police Division collaborates closely with the Columbus Division of Police to enhance vigilance through patrols.

Despite these efforts, Carter reminded everyone that Columbus experiences crime similar to other large cities nationwide. The university offers various resources related to emergency procedures, including instructions for sheltering-in-place and video materials covering self-defense tips and active aggressor situations.

In closing, President Carter expressed pride in being part of the Ohio State community and wished those traveling or taking time off an enjoyable autumn break.
