The Ohio State University is urging its community members to prioritize safety while traveling around campus. Monica Moll, associate vice president of the Department of Public Safety, communicated this message to students, faculty, and staff today with the reminder: “You’re going places, get there safely.”

“We are asking everyone to look out for their fellow Buckeyes by being aware of their surroundings,” Moll wrote. “Your safety is our top priority, and we all play a part in promoting a safe campus environment when traveling to class and work.”

While the university boasts a pedestrian-friendly campus, it acknowledges that congestion can occur due to cars, bikes, and scooters. The message emphasizes that bikes and scooters should adhere to traffic rules applicable to vehicles and use the road rather than sidewalks. Cyclists are entitled to use the full lane, and motorists must maintain at least 3 feet of space when passing them. Both scooter and bike riders are advised to wear helmets and exercise caution; scooters should be ridden by one person at a time.

Motorists are reminded not to text while driving and remain vigilant for pedestrians crossing streets. Pedestrians should always utilize crosswalks and wait for walk signals before entering roadways. At non-signalized crosswalks, they should ensure vehicle traffic is slowing before proceeding.

Additional safety tips include avoiding walking alone at night, using transportation services like CABS or Lyft Ride Smart at Ohio State, employing Rave Guardian for location tracking by friends or family as virtual guardians, locking doors and windows at home, not leaving valuables or keys in vehicles, and reporting suspicious activities or missing items promptly.

For on-campus incidents, contact The Ohio State University Police Division at 614-292-2121. Off-campus reports can be made to local law enforcement such as Columbus Police (614-645-4545). In emergencies, dial 9-1-1. More safety resources are available online.
