Many people find themselves overanalyzing situations, according to Master Coach Marilou Butcher Roth. In her latest column, she addresses the tendency for some individuals to spend too much time thinking about issues without reaching a solution.

Roth describes several signs that someone may be prone to overanalysis. These include spending excessive time considering an issue without making progress, creating unfounded stories or assumptions, viewing matters as overly serious, being judgmental, and having difficulty sleeping due to racing thoughts.

She notes that while thinking itself is not problematic, it becomes an issue when it starts interfering with daily life. To address this "analysis paralysis," Roth offers practical suggestions: "Stay out of the stories and assumptions! Ask yourself if you know for certain that the tale you have woven is absolutely true." She also recommends writing down thoughts to clear the mind and finding things to appreciate in everyday life.

Another technique she shares involves visualizing a gauge or thermometer in the mind that represents analytical activity. Roth suggests mentally lowering this gauge as a way to reduce overthinking: "Whatever you see at first glance is perfect - do NOT overanalyze this one! Now, mentally bring the percentage down as low as you can."

Roth emphasizes self-compassion throughout this process. "Lastly, throughout all of this, remember to be gentle with yourself. Our brains are our allies and can work beautifully in our favor. Try not to push them to the extreme unnecessarily."

Marilou Butcher Roth owns The MBR Group, which provides coaching and training services primarily for REALTORS seeking inspiration in their work and lives. She is also Broker/Owner of Group REALTORS in Cincinnati. Roth serves on the Ohio REALTORS Board of Directors and has previously chaired its Communications Committee.
