Today is Friday the 13th, a day often associated with bad luck. Master Coach Marilou Butcher Roth explores the significance of this date and introduces the concept of "Fear Flags," which she learned from Kathleen Hendricks during her coaching apprenticeship. These flags represent different ways fear manifests in individuals.
The first flag, FIGHT, occurs when someone becomes argumentative or defensive. Roth advises that logic is unlikely to work in these situations and suggests giving space instead.
The second flag, FLEE, doesn't always mean a physical departure but can be expressed through statements like "I'm done!" Again, presenting logical arguments may not be effective, and providing space might help.
FAINT is described as someone becoming "fuzzy" or losing clarity. In real estate negotiations, Roth has observed this behavior frequently. She recommends changing the conversation to something clear to address this flag.
FREEZE is Roth's personal go-to response when fear arises. This response halts movement, breath, and conversation. To counteract it, she suggests moving or taking a short walk.
Roth emphasizes that everyone experiences these flags both personally and when observing others. Recognizing fear without judgment can foster empathy. Notably, witnessing one flag in another person might trigger one's own flag response; for instance, FIGHT might induce FREEZE in an observer.
On this Friday the 13th, Roth encourages readers to identify their own Fear Flags and engage with them without fear.
