April is designated as National Fair Housing Month, marking an opportunity to address ongoing housing discrimination issues and celebrate the Fair Housing Act. This legislation, enacted in 1968, aims to ensure equal access to housing for all individuals, safeguarding rights against discrimination based on factors such as race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, or disability.

Ohio REALTORS, along with real estate professionals nationwide, observe this month as a reaffirmation of their commitment to offering equitable and professional services to everyone navigating the real estate market.

The National Association of REALTORS touts strong fair housing laws and practices as vital to community flourishing and economic stability. According to them, "discrimination distorts the housing market and denies qualified buyers access to homeownership." The association continues its support of fair housing through policy advocacy, innovative programming, and legal assistance.

Federal protections under the Fair Housing Act are supplemented by state and local regulations. Ohio has been proactive in this realm, having passed legislation in 1965 to protect individuals in designated classes from discriminatory practices. The Ohio Civil Rights Commission is tasked with enforcing these regulations, along with the state's adaptation of the Fair Housing Act.

Engaging in National Fair Housing Month offers the opportunity to advocate for accountability, promote cultural shifts, and support education on fair housing. By getting involved now, individuals can play a part in building a more inclusive and equitable future for everyone.
