Senator JD Vance of Ohio visited striking United Auto Workers (UAW) at the Toledo Assembly Complex in Toledo, Ohio. During his visit, Senator Vance expressed support for the workers and their demands.
"Great to visit the auto workers striking in Toledo this morning," said Senator Vance. "They’re in high spirits and have a simple message: good wages for an honest day’s work. I’m proud to support them."
He shared stories from the workers, including one from a father of three who struggles financially despite working 60-hour weeks. Concerns were also raised about job security with threats of jobs moving to Mexico and fears that industry electrification could lead to job losses.
"This isn’t about politics," he stated. "For many years, the auto workers took it on the chin to enable the industry to retool, reinvest, and thrive. Today, the industry is doing well and the workers should get a slice of the pie."
Senator Vance has introduced legislation known as the Drive American Act aimed at eliminating over $100 billion in electric vehicle subsidies. The act proposes replacing these with an America First Vehicle Credit to encourage production of gas-powered vehicles within the U.S., offering up to $7,500 credit based on certain criteria such as assembly location and worker compensation.
Jeep vehicles manufactured by UAW members at Toledo Assembly Complex would be eligible for this credit if significant wage increases are provided to facility workers.
