Over many years of coaching, recurring themes have emerged among clients and occasionally within myself. One prevalent theme concerns how we spend our time. Personally, I strive to use my time purposefully, although this does not always happen. Sometimes, I find myself in front of the television with nothing specific to watch.

I am not passing judgment on myself or anyone else for spending time unconsciously; noticing this pattern is helpful in returning to a positive state of mind. Often, I do not realize I am disengaging until much later.

Today, I am examining how we may inadvertently contribute to a sense of malaise by not paying attention to how we spend our precious time. Instead of tuning out, we need to focus on activities that promote joy and fulfillment.

It can be easy to default to passive activities like watching television or eating. Today, take stock of your current state and periodically ask yourself if you are spending your time in alignment with your goals, desires, and values. This isn’t difficult—it simply requires attention. Sometimes it’s as simple as turning off the TV and putting down that bag of chips.
