Honoring her legacy. Ms Rosa Parks, but who was she?
Born February 4, 1913, she was a key player in the Civil Rights Movement after refusing to move seats for a white person on a segregated bus on December 1st, 1955 in Alabama. Ms. Rosa Parks was quoted saying after her arrest, “I was tired of giving in to discriminatory laws”.
This particular law stated that passengers should have separate but equal seating, with a line down the middle of the bus. This separated white passengers from black passengers. Black people would get on in the front to pay for their ticket and then get off the bus to board again through the back door. The bus had filled up with white passengers, and with no other seats had forced them to stand. The bus driver then moved the separating line back one row, forcing four black passengers to give up their seats. The other passengers obeyed him, but Rosa Parks remained seated stating that she didn’t have to stand up. The driver called the police, who arrived and arrested Parks.
Her courage has led us to remember Rosa Parks in many ways.
