Ohio's recent election results are set to influence the political landscape at various levels for years to come. The state, once again in the national spotlight, showcased significant shifts as election night unfolded.
In the presidential race, former President Donald Trump and Ohio Senator J.D. Vance emerged victorious over Democrats Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, securing over 55% of the vote in Ohio. This win also boosted Republican candidates down the ballot, particularly in the U.S. Senate race where Bernie Moreno defeated long-time Senator Sherrod Brown by nearly 4%. This victory was part of a broader trend that saw Republicans gaining enough seats to secure a majority in the U.S. Senate.
Ohio's Congressional races saw all 15 seats contested with Republicans maintaining control of 10. A notable contest occurred in Northwest Ohio where Democratic Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur faced a strong challenge from Republican State Representative Derek Merrin.
The Ohio Supreme Court elections resulted in Republicans Megan Shanahan, Dan Hawkins, and Joe Deters winning all three available seats. This outcome gave Republicans a significant 6-1 majority on the court.
State Issue 1, which proposed changes to Ohio's redistricting process through an "Ohio Citizens Redistricting Commission," was defeated with nearly 54% of voters opposing it due to concerns about accountability and unelected officials handling redistricting power.
In state legislature races, Republicans maintained strong majorities in both chambers despite Democrats gaining two seats each in the House and Senate. The current power dynamics stand at a 65-34 majority in the House and a 24-9 majority in the Senate.
Looking forward, Ohio REALTORS® plan to advocate for policies supporting property rights and housing affordability while building relationships with newly elected officials as they head into 2025.
