Franklin County Sheriff's Office issued the following announcement on Feb 11.
“People ask me all the time, when is the ice safe? I tell them, never.” The FCSO Dive Rescue and Recovery Team spent a chilly day training for cold water rescues at Prairie Lakes Metro Park. Divers needed a chain saw to cut through a section of ice, but Lt. Ed Schillig, a 23-year veteran of the dive team, says don’t be fooled.
“It may look solid but there are weak spots. Around here, ice freezes, melts, re-freezes, and that cycle weakens the ice. I tell everyone if you want to go ice skating, go to an ice rink.”
