He was born October 5, 1921, in Columbus, Ohio. He attended East High School. At Ohio State, he starred as a lineman and helped win the 1942 national title. He joined the Cleveland Browns in 1946. He and Marion Motley broke the NFL color barrier. He played through 1953. He helped win multiple league championships. He was selected All-Pro for seven seasons. After football, he returned to Columbus. He worked in the city’s recreation department. Later, he became director of the Ohio Youth Commission. He supported youth and families in Columbus. His number 99 was retired by Ohio State. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977. His legacy continues in the city where he was born.
