Ohio State University has released information outlining key initiatives and resources for the 2025-26 academic year as students, faculty, and staff return to campus. The update covers safety measures, well-being resources, new facilities, legislative compliance, and support for freedom of expression.

The university reports an increased presence of police on the Columbus campus through the hiring and training of additional Ohio State University Police Division (OSUPD) officers. Collaboration with the Columbus Division of Police (CPD) has led to joint patrols in neighborhoods where many students live. This effort supplements existing security operations both on and off campus.

Ohio State continues to provide late-night transportation through its Lyft Ride Smart program, offering discounted rides from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Students can also obtain complimentary personal safety alarms at the Willie J. Young Sr. Off-Campus and Commuter Student Engagement office in the Ohio Union during business hours. Additional safety devices such as window and door alarms are available for student residences.

Other ongoing safety investments include authorizing OSUPD to reach a goal of 75 full-time officers supported by non-sworn security personnel, expanding surveillance camera coverage monitored by a 24/7 dispatch center, supporting license plate reader cameras on and off campus, adopting steady blue cruise lights for nighttime patrols to deter crime, and maintaining Buckeye Block Watch patrols focused on engagement skills including mental health response.

For well-being support, Ohio State offers services guided by its 10 Dimensions of Wellness model. Students have access to counseling options through Counseling and Consultation Service—ranging from drop-in workshops to teletherapy—and peer coaching at the Student Life Student Wellness Center on topics like personal finance and nutrition. The Monda Student Resource Center provides holistic support in partnership with campus and community organizations.

A new resource hub called Buckeye Commons has opened on the first floor of the Ohio Union. It serves as a central space for students to connect, participate in educational programs covering leadership, career preparation, study skills, time management, and community building.

Regarding recent legislation impacting higher education in Ohio, Governor Mike DeWine signed Senate Bill 1 into law earlier this year; most provisions take effect June 27, 2025. A university-wide committee developed implementation guidance with input from faculty, staff, and students. Resources about SB 1 compliance are available online alongside guidance from state authorities. The Office of Faculty Affairs will hold open office hours throughout fall semester for faculty questions about SB 1-related issues.

According to university statements: “Academic freedom is a core value at Ohio State,” adding that “SB 1 does not restrict the freedom of faculty to teach...or discuss in classrooms...any material that is relevant...” The law requires institutions “to ensure the fullest degree of intellectual diversity” so students can form their own conclusions.

On freedom of expression issues: “Ohio State remains committed to protecting the First Amendment right to free speech...on our campuses.” Policies allow for content-neutral restrictions regarding time, place, or manner while aiming not to disrupt core missions such as teaching or research.

To promote constructive dialogue within its community: “The university’s civil discourse initiative is focused on helping members...listen to and discuss different perspectives productively...build trust...and clearly articulate their point of view.”

Faculty seeking more information can visit relevant university websites or participate in upcoming workshops designed around these initiatives.
