U.S. Representative Joyce Beatty, who represents Ohio’s 3rd district in Congress, used her social media platform this week to highlight the 90th anniversary of Social Security and discuss ongoing issues facing seniors. Beatty, a longtime public servant who has represented her district since 2013 after serving in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1999 to 2008, posted several messages on X (formerly Twitter) between August 14 and August 15.
On August 14, Beatty acknowledged the historic milestone: "Today marks the 90th anniversary of when Social Security was signed into law — a promise we made to America’s seniors that they could retire with dignity. Want to know why Social Security matters? Hear from our panelists at Monday’s forum as they share why it matters."
Following a forum on Social Security, she addressed concerns voiced by local seniors. On August 15, she wrote: "After our Social Security forum on Monday, I spoke to the press about the urgency of the issues our seniors communicated to me regarding their earned benefits. Democrats built Social Security and have defended it against decades of attacks. We won't stop now. Full video? Click https://t.co/qqeH0XVQL2"
Later that same day, Beatty provided resources for constituents seeking more information: "Seniors, still have questions about Social Security after our event? Get them answered directly from the Social Security administration at their free webinars. RSVP to any and all of them HERE: https://t.co/qAioQlWamp https://t.co/p0WzZPItQY"
Social Security was established in 1935 as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal policies, designed as a safety net for retired Americans and those unable to work due to disability or age. Over its nine decades, it has remained a foundational element of U.S. social policy and has been subject to ongoing debate over funding and reform.
Joyce Beatty was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1950 and currently resides in Columbus at age 73. She is an alumna of Central State University (class of 1972). As an advocate for her district's senior citizens, she continues to emphasize access to resources and protection for earned benefits through legislative action.
