U.S. Representative Mike Carey (R-Ohio-15) attended a White House ceremony where President Trump signed the Halt All Lethal Trafficking of Fentanyl Act, also known as the HALT Fentanyl Act. This legislation aims to address the issue of fentanyl and related substances entering American communities.
Rep. Carey expressed his concern over the impact of opioids in Ohio, particularly fentanyl. "Too many Ohioans and their loved ones have been devastated by the opioid epidemic, especially the scourge of deadly fentanyl," he stated. He emphasized that this new law represents progress in preventing fentanyl from affecting communities and honors those lost to its effects.
The HALT Fentanyl Act categorizes fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I under the Controlled Substances Act. This classification is for drugs with high abuse potential and no accepted medical use, subjecting them to strict regulatory controls.
The bill received bipartisan support in Congress, passing the House on June 12 with a vote count of 321-104. Rep. Carey also highlighted his recent activities, including a visit to Franklin County Crisis Care Center and supporting border security measures through legislative votes.
