U.S. Representatives Mike Carey and Jimmy Panetta have reintroduced the Veterans Border Patrol Training Act, a bipartisan initiative aimed at assisting military service members in transitioning to civilian roles as border patrol agents. The legislation addresses the ongoing shortage of border patrol agents by leveraging the skills veterans acquired during their military service.

Rep. Carey emphasized the importance of this bill, stating, "For years, Border Patrol has faced a shortage of agents that work to keep our border safe and intercept threats to our nation. The Veterans Border Patrol Training Act helps veterans transition into civilian life in a career that requires many of the skills they learned and mastered in the military." He urged his colleagues to support this initiative.

Rep. Panetta highlighted the challenges faced by veterans transitioning to civilian life despite their valuable skills. "Too many of our military members face unnecessary hurdles when transitioning to civilian life, despite having the skills and experience that are greatly needed in federal service," he said. The bill aims to create pathways for these individuals to train and work as U.S. Border Patrol Agents, thus addressing staffing needs while honoring their service.

The Senate has also seen companion legislation introduced by Senators Richard Blumenthal and James Lankford.
