The Ohio State University has announced a new initiative aimed at equipping students with artificial intelligence (AI) skills. The AI Fluency initiative, set to launch this fall for first-year students, will integrate AI education into the core curriculum for all undergraduates. This program is designed to provide students with not only technical AI skills but also an understanding of the ethical and secure use of AI across various disciplines.

Ohio State President Walter “Ted” Carter Jr. emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "Artificial intelligence is transforming the way we live, work, teach and learn. In the not-so-distant future, every job, in every industry, is going to be impacted in some way by AI." He added that Ohio State has a responsibility to prepare students to lead in the future workforce.

The initiative aligns with Carter's Education for Citizenship 2035 strategic plan, which focuses on academic excellence and adaptability. The plan aims to redefine higher education to meet future needs.

Key components of the AI Fluency initiative include introducing generative AI basics through required seminars and workshops as part of the First Year Success Series. A new course titled "Unlocking Generative AI" will be available to all majors. Ravi V. Bellamkonda, executive vice president and provost, noted that through this program, "Ohio State students will be 'bilingual' — fluent in both their major field of study and the application of AI in that area."

The initiative also supports faculty by providing resources for integrating AI into teaching practices. The Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning will offer financial and advisory support for instructors. Peter Mohler, executive vice president for research, innovation and knowledge highlighted Ohio State's role in advancing AI research: “Our university is leading the way in a multidisciplinary approach to harnessing AI’s benefits.”

Additionally, Ohio State plans to empower students through hands-on experiences such as hackathons and workshops aimed at fostering entrepreneurship.

Further details about these programs are expected in upcoming months as Ohio State prepares its students to become leaders in an increasingly AI-driven economy.
