The new Metro@Indianola campus has officially opened its doors in The University District, providing students access to a public STEM education. The initiative is part of Metro Schools, which now occupies the historic Indianola Middle School building—an establishment purchased by The Ohio State University in 2017 and leased to Metro Schools in 2021.

The $15 million renovation, made possible by contributions from the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission, Battelle, and other community donors, promises extensive facilities for students. The refurbishment signifies an enduring commitment to STEM education in Central Ohio, according to Wes Hall, Battelle's senior vice president for philanthropy and education.

Ohio State’s College Credit Plus program director, Stephanie Elliot, highlights the benefits of the new campus: "Metro Early College High School offers a mastery-based learning approach with a strong emphasis on STEM education, equipping students for success both in high school and their future endeavors.”

Significantly expanding its enrollment capacity, Metro@Indianola is set to serve up to 1,200 students, an increase from the 900 currently enrolled at the original Metro location on Kenny Road. The Kenny Road site is transforming into Metro Elementary School.

Superintendent of Metro Schools, Meka Pace, emphasized the transformation: “This historic building has been reimagined as a cutting-edge learning space where students will develop the skills and mindset needed for success in a rapidly evolving world."

Applications for admissions are ongoing, with preference given to residents within the University District. Half of the Metro Schools student body comprises students from the Columbus City School district. The school has a history of achievements, boasting a 100% graduation rate since opening.

The Indianola Middle School building, designed by Howard Dwight Smith and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, continues to be a part of Columbus’s educational legacy. Noted alumni include Wil Haygood and the late Curt Moody.
