Ohio homeowners may soon experience more clarity in property tax levies following the passage of House Bill (HB) 28 by the Ohio House of Representatives. The bill, designed to address confusion regarding property tax levy implications, will now proceed to the Ohio Senate's committee process.
The proposal has garnered support from Ohio REALTORS, who provided proponent testimony during its hearings in the Ohio House. The bill aims to prevent taxing authorities from presenting replacement levies to voters, which often leads to misunderstandings among residents about their effects compared to renewal levies.
Currently, constitutional protections against significant tax increases apply only to renewal levies and not replacement levies. This distinction results in higher property taxes when property values increase. By eliminating replacement levies from ballots, HB 28 seeks to simplify voter understanding of how these decisions impact their taxes.
Ohio REALTORS have committed to advocating for HB 28 as it moves through the legislative process in the Senate and will continue urging lawmakers to support this measure.
