With Valentine's Day approaching, the Ohio Department of Commerce is focusing on ensuring the safety of stuffed animals, a popular gift choice. The Division of Industrial Compliance's Bedding, Upholstered Furniture, and Stuffed Toy Section is responsible for enforcing regulations related to the manufacturing, importation, distribution, and sale of these items.

Rick Selegue, Chief Bedding Inspector at DIC, said: "Even items as innocent and timeless as a stuffed bear could be hiding potential dangers, and our mission is to make sure each and every stuffed item on store shelves is 100% safe for Ohioans." He added that their team ensures toys are free from harmful materials and properly labeled.

Manufacturers and distributors must register with DIC to maintain accountability. The department also monitors secondhand dealers and others to ensure compliance with state standards. This regulation helps protect consumers and builds trust in products.

Ohioans are encouraged to check labels for compliance when purchasing stuffed toys. More information can be found on the Section’s website.
