The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has opened a new dental clinic at its Outpatient Care East location. This addition aims to expand health care services for the community, particularly the medically underserved.
The clinic is part of Ohio State's Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), which receives federal funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration. Operating as Total Health and Wellness since 2012, this nurse practitioner-led primary care practice by the Ohio State College of Nursing provides health care services regardless of patients' ability to pay.
In collaboration with the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, the program has now expanded into The Ohio State University Total Health Care Center. This expansion will provide integrated access to comprehensive physical and mental health services, including dental care, specialty care, pharmacy, vision care, and more.
"From the very beginning, our mission has been to care for the whole person and help them manage any chronic conditions or health concerns they may have," said Candy Rinehart, who leads the Total Health Care Center. "The interdisciplinary, team-based model that we use has improved outcomes for so many of our patients, and we are thrilled to continue building trust with and caring for this wonderful community that we serve."
The FQHC also includes sites at Ohio State East Hospital and St. Vincent Family Services. Family Community Medicine at Outpatient Care East joined last November, increasing patient capacity by 50%.
"We're excited to work with the Total Health Care Center and the FQHC model of primary care. This is a proven approach that addresses critical gaps in care that too often occur for the medically underserved," said Ryan Haley, senior director of ambulatory services at Ohio State Wexner Medical Center.
State Sen. Hearcel F. Craig (Columbus) helped secure $1.2 million in state funding to add dental services to the FQHC.
"Throughout my time in public service, improving the well-being of our Columbus residents has always been my top priority," said Craig. "I am very proud to have advocated for the clinic at the Statehouse for several years. Good dental health is critical, especially for children; it builds a foundation for better overall health and confidence."
The new Outpatient Care East Dental Clinic is open and taking appointments. A dentist and hygienist from the Ohio State College of Dentistry will see patients in six new treatment spaces.
"As dental professionals, we know good oral care is a pillar of a healthy person," said Matthew Messina, associate professor in the College of Dentistry. "We're excited to partner with the medical center and College of Nursing to provide dental care at Outpatient Care East."
