Senator JD Vance (R-OH) and Congressman Michael Cloud (R-TX-27), along with several cosponsors, have introduced the Dismantle DEI Act aimed at eliminating all federal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs. The proposed legislation seeks to rescind executive orders related to DEI, terminate Chief Diversity Officers, close DEI offices, end related training sessions, outlaw mandatory employee DEI pledges, and revoke DEI funding across multiple federal departments.
Since taking office, President Biden's administration has implemented DEI policies across numerous federal agencies. The new bill aims to reverse these actions by prohibiting the awarding of federal contracts to entities that employ prohibited DEI practices and preventing federal grant recipients from using such practices.
Senator Vance stated: “The DEI agenda is a destructive ideology that breeds hatred and racial division. It has no place in our federal government or anywhere else in our society.” He emphasized that American tax dollars should not fund what he termed a "radical and divisive ideology."
Congressman Cloud added: “DEI practices have zero place in our federal government. These initiatives...have instead fostered division and racial bias within our institutions." He called the bill a necessary step to restore merit-based systems in government institutions.
Other supporting senators echoed similar sentiments. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) criticized the use of taxpayer money for what she described as divisive programs contrary to American ideals of equality. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) argued that DEI institutionalizes discrimination in hiring processes.
Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) claimed that President Biden’s focus on diversity programs diverts attention from public service quality. Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO) referred to DEI as a "poisonous ideology" while advocating for its removal from government agencies. Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) denounced the allocation of taxpayer funds towards what he called far-left policies under the guise of equity.
The Dismantle DEI Act has received endorsements from Heritage Action for America, Citizens for Renewing America, and the Claremont Institute’s Center for the American Way of Life. Ryan Walker from Heritage Action asserted that DEI policies perpetuate discrimination rather than promoting true meritocracy. Wade Miller from Citizens for Renewing America labeled these initiatives as anti-American and violative of federal law.
Arthur Milikh from the Claremont Institute expressed support by stating: “Senator Vance continues his ceaseless assault on the core issue that ails America today: the DEI infrastructure...This ideology must be fought.”
