Washington, DC – Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (D-OH-03) and Congressman Mike Carey (R-OH-15) today announced the re-launch of the Congressional Civility and Respect Caucus. Originally established by Congresswoman Joyce Beatty and former Congressman Steve Stivers, the bipartisan Caucus’ goal is to encourage all Members of Congress to act with civility and respect in their political discourse.

Over the next year, Beatty and Carey will visit businesses and civic organizations across Central Ohio to promote the use of respectful dialogue on challenging issues.

"Although Congressman Carey and I hold different political beliefs, we respect one another and are committed to finding opportunities to work together," Beatty said. "Unfortunately, our bipartisan relationship in Congress is the exception rather than the rule. That is exactly why we are re-launching the Congressional Civility and Respect Caucus. Congressman Carey and I both know the value of civility, respect, and open dialogue, and we urge our fellow Members of Congress to do the same."

“Contrary to what is portrayed on most television sets across the nation, bipartisanship still has a home in Washington. For that reason, I am proud to join Congresswoman Beatty in re-launching the Congressional Civility and Respect Caucus,” Carey said. “Regardless of our political beliefs, it’s important that we as a governing body can work together for the good of our constituents, especially in two intertwined Congressional districts like mine and Congresswoman Beatty’s.”

The announcement was made at a panel discussion on civility at the Columbus Partnership following Congressional approval of the Caucus, where Beatty and Carey spoke to CEOs from Columbus’ leading businesses and institutions about the importance of bringing civil discourse back into politics and gave updates on the issues they are working together to tackle.
