Four students from The Ohio State University have received the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program award. Majd Al-Marrawi, Ben Conrad, Harsha Sanaka, and Paolo Sinopoli were announced as 2025 Goldwater Scholars. The award supports undergraduate researchers in science, mathematics, and engineering with up to $7,500 per year for tuition and educational expenses. Scholars are chosen based on academic merit, commitment to research in STEM, and leadership.

Ohio State's President Walter "Ted" Carter Jr. congratulated the scholars, stating, "I join the entire Ohio State community in congratulating our newest Goldwater Scholars. These students embody our commitment to excellence and leadership, and it is a distinct honor for them to be recognized among the nation’s top talent."

Al-Marrawi, a neuroscience major, focuses on cancer genetics in collaboration with professors Renee Bouley and Ruben Petreaca. About his recognition, Al-Marrawi said, "Earning this recognition is more than an honor; it is a testament to perseverance, resilience and the unwavering support of my mentors, friends and family who have shaped my journey."

Conrad, an honors chemistry major and Pelotonia scholar, is engaged in research on drug delivery technology under Professor Jon Parquette. He expressed gratitude, saying, "I am incredibly honored to receive such an award, and I feel immense gratitude for everyone who has supported my research and learning throughout my life."

Sanaka, an honors biomedical science major, works under Professor Christin Burd on cancer biology research. He stated, "I believe this recognition more so reflects the incredible mentorship I have been fortunate enough to have received throughout my research experiences than any individual effort."

Sinopoli, majoring in molecular genetics, studies RNA biology in Professor Anita Hopper's lab and has interned at the National Cancer Institute. He remarked, "Winning the Goldwater Scholarship reflects the exceptional mentorship and training I have received over the years."

A total of 441 scholarships were awarded from 1,350 nominees representing 445 institutions. Each institution can nominate four students, with provisions for additional transfer and veteran students. Since 1986, Ohio State has produced 77 Goldwater Scholars, with four nominees winning in six different years.
