The Ohio State University Department of Athletics and head football coach Ryan Day have reached an agreement on a new seven-year contract. This extension will keep Day as the Buckeyes' head coach through the 2031 season, pending approval by the university Board of Trustees.
The contract is valued at $12.5 million annually, with a base salary of $2 million per year. The announcement follows Ohio State's recent victory in the 2025 College Football Playoff national championship, marking a historic achievement with four playoff wins in just 31 days.
Ross Bjork, Senior Vice President and Wolfe Foundation-Eugene Smith Endowed Athletic Director, praised Day's leadership: “Ohio State Football has long been defined by excellence and, under Ryan Day’s leadership, that tradition has not only continued but thrived.”
Day's coaching record stands at 70-10 over six seasons, with his winning percentage leading all current head coaches nationally. His teams have consistently excelled both on the field and academically. In December 2024, his Buckeyes set records for OSU Scholar-Athletes and Academic All-Big Ten Conference honorees.
Ryan Day expressed gratitude for the support from Ohio State's administration: “I want to thank President Ted Carter, Director of Athletics Ross Bjork and the Board of Trustees for the confidence and trust they have in me to oversee this program.”
Since becoming Ohio State’s head coach in December 2018, Day has led his team to numerous victories including a CFP national championship and multiple Big Ten championships. He has also contributed significantly to player development with several players advancing to professional careers.
Beyond football achievements, Ryan Day and his family are actively involved in mental health advocacy through partnerships like On Our Sleeves. They have established funds to support mental wellness initiatives at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
