The National Weather Service has issued a forecast for a significant weather event expected to affect driving conditions in Columbus on Monday, January 6. The storm is anticipated to bring accumulating snow and wind overnight and into the early morning hours.

In response, The Ohio State University has announced that all in-person classes at its Columbus campus are canceled for January 6. However, instructors are encouraged to conduct virtual synchronous classes if possible. Online classes will proceed as scheduled. The Office of Academic Affairs suggests shifting to synchronous instruction or activities where feasible and recommends asynchronous learning for situations where synchronous instruction isn't viable. In-person classes are set to resume on Tuesday, January 7.

While the campus will remain open, individuals involved in other scheduled activities should confirm any changes or cancellations with their respective leaders. Staff who can work remotely are advised to do so after consulting their supervisors. Essential staff required to perform duties in person should report according to their regular schedules.

Most campus operations, including the Wexner Medical Center and clinical services, will continue as usual. Updates regarding transportation, parking, and facility hours due to weather impacts have been provided.

"The health, safety and well-being of our students, faculty and staff is always our top priority," said a university spokesperson. "A variety of factors are involved in the decision to cancel in-person classes, and each situation is evaluated on its unique circumstances."

Regarding transportation, the university advises planning ahead and allowing extra time or avoiding travel when possible. Campus roadways and sidewalks were treated before snow accumulation began, but significant snow may still cover them despite ongoing plowing efforts. Campus Area Bus Service (CABS) frequencies might be reduced on some routes; however, the Med Center Express will maintain regular service.

CampusParc crews are working on treating parking lots and garages though some rooftop parking areas will be closed due to weather conditions. Specific access details for various permits have been shared.

Facilities such as the Wexner Medical Center locations, Student Life's Student Health Services, campus dining facilities, recreational sports facilities, the Ohio Union, Optometry Services clinics, Dental Clinics, Veterinary Medical Center locations in Columbus and Dublin, Speech and Hearing Clinic remain open.

Safety tips include dressing appropriately for cold weather by wearing layers of loose-fitting clothing and ensuring outer garments are water repellent.

For real-time updates on bus arrivals via CABS or COTA services information can be accessed online through their respective websites.

The Department of Public Safety provides an online real-time weather forecast for further information.
