Ohio REALTORS have expressed their support for the Housing Technical Assistance Grant Program as part of House Bill 315. The bill is designed to tackle Ohio's housing crisis, which has reached a critical level.

The proposed legislation aims to address various township issues and introduces the Housing Technical Assistance Grant Program. This program would allocate $1.5 million annually to assist local governments in updating outdated zoning and housing codes. The initiative is described as a voluntary, resource-driven approach intended to help communities proactively manage Ohio’s growing housing shortage without imposing mandates.

Ohio's need for improved housing infrastructure is evident, with the National Association of REALTORS® reporting that the state lacks more than 100,000 single-family housing permits. This shortage highlights the pressing need for legislative action. Restrictive zoning codes are cited as a significant obstacle, often making housing development expensive and inaccessible.

During their testimony, Ohio REALTORS emphasized that while $1.5 million is a positive start, the demand for grants will likely surpass this amount. They urged committee members to consider increasing funding as the program develops.

House Bill 315 will proceed through further stages of the legislative process in the Ohio Senate.
