Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) published an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal on Apr. 13, discussing former President Donald Trump’s impact on the direction of the Republican Party.
Moreno wrote that Trump revitalized the party by focusing on American workers and manufacturing, arguing that these changes have made the GOP more relevant to everyday Americans. He said, “The Republican Party for decades stood for three core principles: lower taxes, fewer regulations and fiscal discipline, all aimed at shrinking the size and scope of government. These remain worthy objectives and will always be part of our party platform. But something was missing. The party had lost sight of the American worker.”
In his op-ed, Moreno credited Trump with expanding traditional Republican policies to include a strong defense of domestic labor and industry. “President Donald J. Trump changed that. He didn’t abandon the traditional Republican agenda; he expanded and completed it,” Moreno said. He added that tariffs are essential tools for ensuring fairness in trade: “Tariffs aren’t protectionism for its own sake; they’re self-reliance made policy.”
Moreno also addressed foreign policy under Trump’s leadership: “His foreign policy isn’t isolationist…he insists on a lethal military…But he places the American worker at the center of every decision.” He contrasted this approach with what he described as radical changes within the Democratic Party.
According to the official website, Moreno provides newsletter subscriptions to keep Ohio residents informed about his work in Congress. The site also notes that he immigrated from Colombia at age five and became a U.S. citizen at eighteen. The official website reports that Moreno serves on Senate committees dealing with banking, housing, urban affairs, commerce, science, transportation, homeland security, governmental affairs and budget issues.
He promotes blockchain technology and engages experts on autonomous vehicles regarding safety standards according to the official website. Offices are maintained in Washington D.C., Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati to assist constituents. According to his office, Moreno has built one of America’s leading car dealership groups while advocating for equitable lending policies.
Moreno concluded his article by saying: “The Republican Party is stronger…because Mr. Trump reminded us what the GOP was always supposed to be about: America, its workers and the dream that still defines us.”
