The Ohio State University has announced the appointment of Rob Lowden as its new vice president and chief information officer (CIO). Lowden, who will assume his role on August 1, brings over two decades of experience from Indiana University, where he recently served as VP and CIO.
Lowden is recognized for his leadership in modernizing institutions and aligning digital strategies with organizational missions. His work has improved outcomes for students, researchers, faculty, and staff. Chris Kabourek, senior vice president for Administration and Planning at Ohio State, expressed enthusiasm about Lowden’s appointment: “I’m thrilled that we have attracted one of the nation’s top technology leaders to Ohio State.”
In his new role at Ohio State, Lowden will report to Kabourek and oversee the Office of Technology and Digital Innovation (OTDI) during a critical period of digital transformation. His responsibilities will include managing enterprise IT, cybersecurity, data analytics, and digital learning platforms while advancing the university’s vision for AI fluency and digital equity.
Lowden commented on his new position: “I’m honored to join The Ohio State University at this pivotal moment.” He emphasized the importance of leading in AI and digital transformation as part of a land-grant institution with global impact.
During his tenure at Indiana University since 2020, Lowden led IT strategy amid a global pandemic, facilitating a seamless transition to online learning for 200,000 faculty, staff, and students. His leadership also reduced costs and cybersecurity incidents across the organization.
Before joining Indiana University as CIO of its School of Medicine—the largest medical school in the United States—Lowden advanced research infrastructure and clinical education tools. He also served in the United States Navy from 1992-1997.
Lowden holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Technology and a Master of Science in Technology from Purdue University.
