Conor Garland joined the Columbus Blue Jackets on March 11 after being traded from the Vancouver Canucks, marking a significant change in his National Hockey League career. The move came unexpectedly for Garland, who had signed a six-year contract extension with Vancouver last summer and did not anticipate leaving so soon. He was preparing for a road game in Chicago when he learned of the trade.
The trade is important for both Garland and the Blue Jackets as it gives him an opportunity to compete for a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, something that was out of reach with Vancouver this season. For Columbus, acquiring Garland brings experience and skill to a team aiming to end its five-year playoff drought.
Garland said about his new situation, “Had I known I would have packed a lot more clothes.” Despite the sudden move, he expressed enthusiasm about joining a playoff race: “I welcome it. I’m very excited to be in a playoff race. I think one of the things mentally I was probably struggling with was trying to get through those 20 games at the end with no real playoff hopes, and I’m a competitive person.”
His arrival has been well received by teammates and coaches alike. Zach Werenski said, “I love the way he plays. I went to the World Championships last year and played with him, and he was one of our best players… It’s great for our room. It’s a guy coming in here to this close team that’s gonna fit in really well, so I’m all on board with that decision.” Head coach Rick Bowness added, “I’ve coached against him when I was in Winnipeg and Dallas enough to know that he’s a pain in the butt when he’s on top of his game… He’s got good skills.”
Garland’s background includes growing up in Massachusetts where hockey ran deep in his family; his father played college hockey before turning professional briefly. From early on, Garland focused intensely on making it to the NHL despite being undersized: “I guess everybody’s parents have sayings or stuff, but one thing that always stuck out was just no distractions… I understood how challenging it would be, but I was fortunate to have parents direct me.”
Since joining Columbus, Garland has made an immediate impact by scoring four goals in his first three games. He is settling into life both on and off the ice while looking forward to helping his new team reach their postseason goals: “Just winning is what matters,” he said after scoring twice against Tampa Bay. “It’s the best time of year to play in… They’re stressful, but that’s what makes it so fun.”
