Marilou Butcher Roth, a coach and broker based in Cincinnati, has highlighted the importance of clarity in both personal and professional communication. According to Roth, a recurring theme among her clients is the lack of clear agreements and the tendency to make assumptions based on non-verbal cues, such as text messages.

Roth observed that unclear agreements often lead to unmet expectations and disappointment. She noted, “When we do not make and keep clear agreements, expectations will rear their ugly little heads, upturning the hope from all involved that things ‘should’ go a certain way. This problem seems to top the list. Not keeping an agreement, both personal and professional, leads to disappointment every time.”

She also pointed out that misinterpretation of texts or other non-verbal communication can cause misunderstandings. “We see what we see through our individual filters. We then interpret, often incorrectly, without checking our assumptions,” Roth said.

Roth encouraged individuals to strive for clarity in their interactions. She asked readers to consider whether their words and intentions are clear and if they need confirmation from others about expectations. She added, “If this makes you feel uncomfortable, remember: clarity is an act of kindness.”

Marilou Butcher Roth owns The MBR Group, which provides coaching and training services primarily for REALTORS seeking a more inspired approach to work and life. She is also Broker/Owner of Group REALTORS in Cincinnati. Roth serves on the Ohio REALTORS Board of Directors and is a past chairman of its Communications Committee.
