U.S. Representative Mike Carey of Ohio has joined forces with fellow lawmakers to support a new resolution aimed at fostering bipartisan cooperation in Congress. Known as the Building Unity through Dual Sponsors (BUDS) resolution, this initiative seeks to change existing rules within the House of Representatives to allow two members from different political parties to serve as joint sponsors of legislation.
The resolution is spearheaded by U.S. Representatives Emanuel Cleaver from Missouri and Young Kim from California. “Delivering for my constituents is my biggest priority in Congress, and that often stems from bipartisan cooperation,” Rep. Carey stated, emphasizing the importance of collaboration across party lines.
Rep. Cleaver highlighted the necessity of bridging divides during these polarizing times, stating that bipartisan solutions can benefit families nationwide. He expressed optimism about reintroducing the BUDS Resolution alongside Rep. Kim to promote cross-party collaboration.
Echoing similar sentiments, Rep. Kim underscored the significance of finding common ground to enhance American lives and move the country forward. She expressed pride in her record and hopes that the BUDS Act will encourage further collaboration in Congress.
Currently, House rules permit only one lawmaker to sponsor legislation; however, the proposed BUDS resolution aims to formally authorize dual sponsorships between opposing parties.
The resolution also receives support from other representatives including Scott Peters from California, William Timmons from South Carolina, and Kevin Mullin from California.
