The Columbus Blue Jackets announced on Apr. 8 that team captain Boone Jenner has been nominated by the Columbus chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The award is given each year to an NHL player who best shows perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.
This nomination highlights Jenner’s return from a shoulder injury that caused him to miss 56 games at the start of the season. After returning in February, he recorded seven goals and twelve assists in twenty-six games to close out the 2024-25 campaign. This season, Jenner has posted eleven goals and twenty-four assists over sixty-three games, along with forty-two penalty minutes and a plus-one rating.
Jenner reached several career milestones this season, including becoming the first Blue Jackets player to appear in eight hundred games with the franchise on March 29 against Boston. He also registered his two hundredth career assist on January 15 versus Vancouver, his four hundredth point on December 31 against New Jersey, and scored his two hundredth goal on October 11 at Minnesota.
Since being selected thirty-seventh overall by Columbus in the second round of the 2011 NHL Draft, Jenner has played thirteen seasons with the club. He leads all franchise players in games played and ranks among leaders in shots on goal, goals, assists, points, and game-winning goals. Jenner has served as team captain since 2021.
The winner of this year’s Masterton Trophy will be chosen by a poll of all thirty-two PHWA chapters after the regular season ends. The trophy was first awarded in honor of Bill Masterton in nineteen sixty-eight. Last year marked a milestone when Sean Monahan became the first Blue Jackets player ever to win this award.
The Blue Jackets’ next game is scheduled for Thursday against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center.
