The Columbus Blue Jackets, facing a six-game losing streak, are preparing for a crucial final stretch of the season as they try to make up two points in their last five games, according to an April 6 update. The team is currently outside the playoff spots but remains determined to close the gap in the Eastern Conference and end a five-year absence from postseason play.

With only eight days remaining in the regular season, players and coaches say that communication and belief within the group will be key. Forward Mason Marchment said after Saturday’s loss to Winnipeg, “We’re all men in here, and we’re a family. It’s nice to hear what everyone (thinks) and where we all sit. I think for me, it’s just belief…just believing at every stage…just believing in each other and the guy next to you.”

Head coach Rick Bowness identified puck management as a major issue affecting recent performances. “All our issues right now are related to just terrible puck management,” Bowness said after Saturday’s game. “We create the second-most chances on the forecheck in the entire league, yet we want to get inside the blue line and make cute little plays against good teams that aren’t working.” Defenseman Zach Werenski also pointed out problems with on-ice connection: “I think guys are working, but I think it’s that unpredictability. We’re just all not on the same page right now.”

Despite injuries sidelining key players like Damon Severson and Mathieu Olivier, there is optimism drawn from past experiences; Werenski recalled how a late surge helped secure a playoff spot in 2019: “I remember we had all the conversations in the room about winning…and then next thing you know we’re dynamite in the playoffs.” The Blue Jackets have struggled offensively during their recent skid—scoring only ten goals over six games—and have been outscored significantly during third periods.

Looking ahead, both coaches and players maintain confidence that they can turn things around if they return to their strengths as a hard-skating team focused on pressure hockey. Bowness concluded: “This is a proud group…Do we need some better efforts? Yes…And we’re going to get them. This is a proud group… I’ve loved working with them. I still believe in them.”
